Welcome to Advanced Communication Skills

Put on your sunglasses. The future of corporate communications is bright, even blinding. Students in this Advance Communications Skills class will spend this semester exploring new strategies and tactics being used in professional communications. Forward thinking communication professionals understand that the Internet is constantly changing the way we give and receive information. Consumers now access media, information and entertainment in a variety of ways--anytime, anywhere. In this hypercompetitive public relations marketplace, today’s practitioners must have some working knowledge of the technology that is changing the business of communication.

So this semester, we’ll examine the impact of blogs, podcasting, and RSS feeds. Students will also become familiar with the best practices in corporate communications. We will do this by using our student blogs to invite the professional PR community to contribute their insights on our class blogsite.

To get started, each student must post a comment here regarding your overall impression of blogging. Do this AFTER you have browsed the recommended blog sites and have read the blog articles assigned in class. Be sure to sign your name to your comment. Next, each student will build a personal blog site throughout the semester. But more on that in class.

To be honest the world of blogging is somewhat foreign to me so I am excited to learn more about this new online PR tool and what it has to offer to the field of communications. This was the first blog site I had ever browsed and even though I was overwhelmed at first, the organization and easy to navigate format made the experience pleasant. I`m excited to start blogging!

After viewing a variety of blogs, I now have a better sense of their overall makeup and purpose. While currently I feel like a neophyte in regards to blog sites, I am really looking forward to learning more about them becoming well versed in how to create and maintain a blog. I think this class is going to provide an excellent opportunity to take a closer look and gain a new understanding of this up and coming area of technology.

This is my first time to ever comment on a blog or really do anything involving blogs. After browsing and looking at many different sites, I found it interesting that so many corporations and CEO's have their own blogs. I knew that blogs were an increasing trend, but I guess I didn't realize that professionals were also using them. There is a ton of useful information on the blogsites of major agencies like Edelman. This is all new to me. I know this will be a great advantage in trying to get a job at a large PR agency.

After working for Backstage Creations this summer as the PR intern, I have a better understanding of how the industry works. After each award show we would post a blog on the company's myspace account about which celebrity stopped by the room and what product they picked up. We would also add photos of the celebrities with our clients products. This was a great way to generate exposure for our clients. This however, is the only type of blog I am accustomed to so I am very excited to learn more about blogging. I think it is a very entertaining and efficient way to communicate information.

Hi-

I just started my own blog! This whole process is actually pretty neat, and I look forward to using it to communicate with real professionals in the industry. I'm excited to see how blogs and podcasts can be better utilized in the PR field for disseminating messages and exchanging ideas!

I looked through many of the blogs you have listed and really enjoyed the PRSA blog. I definitely want to become actively involved in PRSA after graduation. I do have some past experience with blogging and web site building from the SMUNews.com amd Online Journalism classes I took when majoring in journalism. I'm excited to get back into blogging and learn how to present my site in a more professional and appealing manner. I hope I can build it into something that I'm proud to show potential employers. This class seems really fun and I'm excited for the upcoming semester.

Blogging has been an up and coming trend in our technologically advanced global society. I started blogging during my summer internship at the Dallas Center for the Performing Arts Foundation and was utterly stunned by how many companies had blog sites. Many companies blog sites are run by interns since blogging is relatively new and not many "old-timers" are completely familiar with it. I believe blogging will continue playing a crucial role in terms of information gathering...more and more companies and organizations, large and small, will look at blogs to retrieve news. The internet plays a key role in organizations today and blogging will soon be just as prominent in the workplace.

I think the uprising of blogs in the internet world is fascinating. To be honest, I feel like its wave of popularity has whizzed past me and I haven't really gotten a chance to understand its significance in the PR world. I am excited to finally be in a class where I can learn more and understand how blogs work. At the same time, I am a little intimidated. Hopefully this semester will allow me to be comfortable with this new technology and its impact on communication.

It seems that I am in the same boat with the rest of my classmates about blogging. I originally thought that blogs were used as a resource for people to vent-an online diary of some sort. Little did I know that blogging is transforming the communications/PR world. I am so glad that this class is offered. I look forward to becoming an "in the know" blogger.

This is my first time to comment on a blog. I often times read blogs such as Frontburner or Edeleman 6 a.m., however never actively communicate. I am excited and interested to learn and understand how blogging actually works and how to create a blog of my own!

Blogs are pretty foreign to me as well, but its pretty amazing to me that anyone can put anything they want on the internet for everyone to see. I see this as being somewhat dangerous in some ways, but its also freedom of speech. I am looking forward to learning more about blogs and understanding their impact in the communications world.

I agree, blogs seem to be an amazing new tool for the feild of PR, but I have to admit that while browsing these sites I got a little overwhelmed by the information available and the prospect of doing a personal blog. It's an idea that I never really thought about before now, so I am interested to see how this class will progress.

While blogs are important, also review how blogs intersect with social media websites such as YouTube or Flickr. Conversation happens across and between such websites.

I am so pleased to see that SMU is is constantly keeping its students ahead of the game. Communications as we knew it for most parents, is such an antiquated notion these days. We're constantly asking our kids about the meaning of new terms and or new sites to we can go to for information. Communications is constantly changing and I'm just proud my daughter is in a place where she is getting the most up to date informaion out there. Thank You SMU.
