Taking Root

It's not an orignial notion, but it is still fresh: working in corporate communication is about networking, establishing a strong root system in order to grow. That' what students in this Communication, Technology and Globalization class will be doing this semester. Students will branch out, make connections and explore new strategies and tactics being used in professional communications. Forward thinking communication professionals understand that the Internet is constantly changing the way we give and receive information. Consumers now access media, information and entertainment in a variety of ways, at a moment's notice — anytime, anywhere. In this hypercompetitive global marketplace, communication students must learn to navigate in a rapidly changing, complex web of information exchange. Getting your message out there has never been so instant and so complicated.

So this semester, we’ll examine the latest trends in communication technology, beginning with blogs. We'll use the blog format as a forum for discussing current best practices in corporate communications. We will do this by using our student blogs to invite the professional PR community to contribute their insights on our class blogsite. By doing this, we hope to put down roots, create mentor relationships, and open up frank, informative dialog.

To get started, each student is invited to post a comment here describing your goals for the class this semester. But first, browse the blog links on this site to get familiar with ideas that fellow communication students and professionals are discussing in the blogosphere. Be sure to sign your name to your comment. Next, each student will build a personal blog site. But more on that in class.

I'm really excited about this class. After reading this post and sitting through class today I think this class will be more beneficial than just learning about blogging and other technological communication techniques. I think the class is also going to provide valuable insight into the communications industry, particularly PR, and teach us a lot about the communications industry - a very valuable asset when going into interviews for jobs and internships.

I am excited to learn about blogging this semester! It is completely foreign to me and have always heard about it, but never involved myself in it!

Hi Prof. Flournoy! I'm excited about this class, even though I feel like a complete fish out of water with this blog! Hopefully I'll start catching on...

Thanks for letting me in this class, Prof. Flournoy!

I think this course will really give students an advantage over other graduates when the time comes to find a job.

I've already seen the benefits of keeping up with communication technology, as the editors at D Magazine (where I currently intern)were highly impressed when I told them about this class and the blogs we have created.

I look forward to becoming more comfortable with my blog and all the PR tools this course will supply.

I am really excited to learn more about the world of blogging this semester. This class has just begun and I can already see how learning to blog will give me an advantage when I enter the career world. I cannot wait to develop my blog throughout the semester and use it to network with others who share my thoughts and can give me advice on my career plans!

My favorite classes throughout my college career have always been the courses that teach hands on experience in one way or another. I am really looking forward to this semester and am interested in seeing how the blogging world works. Your blog looks great and I love how you tied in the image with the title. Very creative!

Good to see a course that includes some hands-on involvement. My best experience in university was working on the college paper. It wasn't for credit, but nobody cared. We thought we ruled the campus!

I've seen lots of students commenting on various blogs over the past couple of years, and if I can offer any advice it's to actually comment about what's in the blog post, not about blogging generally. (I'm not criticizing the comments on this post, but am talking about what I've seen from other PR students, etc.)

Get out there, read lots, leave comments when you have something to add, a question to ask, or a suggestion of a complementary source people could read to extend the discussion.

Good luck, class!
